MEXT Scholarships

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT or Monbukagakusho) offers scholarships each year to assist students who are interested in enrolling in Japanese universities. As of the 2015 Japanese academic year, some 102,000 students from approximately 160 countries and regions around the world have studied in Japan under the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho) Scholarship program established in 1954. As of May 1, 2015, there were 9,223 foreign students studying in Japan as Japanese government scholarship students. Annually MEXT offers Research, Undergraduate, Japanese Studies, and Specialized Training scholarships to U.S. citizens living in Michigan and Ohio through our Consulate in Detroit.
 

Japanese Studies:

MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Government of Japan) offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to pursue Japanese Studies. This scholarship offers students the opportunity to study in Japan for a period of one year. Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years old and must be enrolled undergraduate students who are majoring in Japanese language and/or Japanese culture.
 

Research Student:

Application deadline: May 22nd

This scholarship offers applicants the opportunity to spend 18 or 24 months conducting independent research under a Japanese professor. Any field of study is eligible for the scholarship, but applicants must find a Japanese professor willing to supervise their research. However, this does not guarantee that the applicant will be placed with that professor.

Undergraduate Student:

This scholarship offers applicants the opporunity to spend up to 5 years at a Japanese college or university as an undergraduate degree student in one of two fields of study: (1) Social Sciences and Humanities or (2) Natural Sciences.

Attention: Please be aware that organizations or individuals who charge application fee or deposit have no relation with the Japanese Government. There is no application fee for the MEXT Scholarships. All application procedures for the MEXT Scholarships are conducted through Japanese Embassies, Consulates in your countries, or institution of higher education in Japan.
