Consul General Shindo with US and Japan Flags
Greetings! My name is Yusuke Shindo, and I am serving as Consul General of Japan in Detroit. I look forward to working with all of you.

There are deep connections between Japan and the two states under our Consulate’s jurisdiction, Michigan and Ohio. Approximately 500 Japanese business offices now operate in each of these two states, making significant contributions to their local economies. These operations, anchored in local communities, contribute to the strengthening of grassroots-level connections between the U.S. and Japan. Together with my colleagues in the Consulate office, I intend to continue supporting the activities of these companies, in a proactive manner.

This region is also home to about 14,000 Japanese residents in Michigan and another 10,000 in Ohio. The Consulate General makes every effort to ensure the safety and well-being of these Japanese residents, and we aim to provide meticulous, high-quality consular services. Please feel free to share with us any opinions or requests you may have regarding our consular services.

Japan can boast to the world about its wonderful culture and traditions. Japanese society is unique in the way it prizes “wa” or harmony. I would like our Consulate to help deepen the understanding of Japan by local residents, and their appreciation of its charms. To that end, I am pleased to know there are so many Japanese language learners in Michigan and Ohio. I hope that, in the process of learning the Japanese language, these individuals will also become familiar with Japan, and gain a good understanding of it. At the Consulate General, we will do our best to increase the number of people interested in Japan and/or Japanese language, so that they can play active roles as our “cheerleaders” in the future.

A number of local governments in Japan have sister-city relationships and active exchanges with local communities in Michigan and Ohio. Such exchanges also contribute to friendly relations between the U.S. and Japan, at a grassroots level. I would like our Consulate to continue supporting such activities as well.

At the Consulate General of Japan in Detroit, the staff and I work hard to be an office that is useful and helpful to all of you and supportive of your activities. We would appreciate it if you could share with us your candid input and feedback. Thank you!
