Learning About Japanese Language and Culture

As the Midwest’s Japanese population grew, and interest in Japan intensified, many other organizations developed in Ohio and Michigan to support Japanese nationals and encourage cross cultural exchange. Japan America Societies, Japanese business organizations, student groups, language, martial arts, bonsai and ikebana clubs have flourished.

The Consulate works to support and augment these vital cultural ties. Through events such as lectures, art exhibitions, speech contests, visitation programs and festivals the Consulate seeks increased cultural awareness and understanding. Consulate-administered Monbukagakusho (Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) grant and scholarship programs provide educational opportunities to Americans wishing to study in Japan. Another Consulate program, JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program, offers Michigan and Ohio university graduates the opportunity to work in Japan as an Assisant Language Teacher or Coordinator of International Relations. As the number of Japanese students studying English and other subjects increase annually in Michigan and Ohio, there are also opportunities for state university students to gain educational and cultural experience in Japan via programs such as the Japan Center for Michigan Universities in Shiga Prefecture, and high school students to take part in the Michigan/Shiga Student Exchange Program .

Through these efforts it is the Consulate’s goal to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the citizens of Japan and the citizens of Michigan and Ohio.

Resources at the Detroit Consulate Office

The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit maintains a library of various materials on Japan and Japanese culture.

For Students, Researchers, General Public:

Booklets, pamphlets, articles and magazines on various aspects of Japan and her culture. These materials may be requested by contacting the Culture Section via phone, mail, fax or email.

For Teachers and Non Profit Organizations:

WE VISIT SCHOOLS! School Visits are available Monday through Friday from 9:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. (Based on Location) Visits are usually 1 to 2 hours and are usually individual classrooms, but this is flexible For more information about school visits see here! »

A variety of materials are available for loan, such as videos, CDs, slides and exhibit items. Other items are available for classrooms or presentations such as wall maps, posters, etc. These materials may be requested by contacting the Culture Section via phone, mail, fax or email.
