Mr. Yoshiteru Tagawa Awarded Commendation of the Consul General of Japan

February 25, 2013 - In recognition of his contribution to the mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States of America, Consul General Kuninori Matsuda has conferred upon Mr. Yoshiteru Tagawa, president of the Detroit Kendo Dojo, a diplomatic commendation. The commendation was presented at the 15th Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament in Novi, Michigan.

Through the promotion of the art and culture of Japan's traditional art of kendo, Mr. Tagawa has raised awareness and understanding of Japanese cultural practices. He has encouraged participation in the study of kendo by Japanese and Americans, providing a means of cross culture exchange and friendship.

In addition;

  • Since 1975, Mr. Tagawa, as a dedicated kendoist has exhibited a solid commitment to the promotion and instruction of Japan's traditional art of kendo and the kendo culture in the United States.
  • To further the encourage and share the art of kendo in the US, Mr. Tagawa has been an active member of the Midwest Kendo Federation and the All United States Kendo Federation, serving in various official capacities.
  • Mr. Tagawa, one of the highest ranking kendo practitioners outside of Japan, founded the Detroit Kendo Dojo in 1996 where he has trained hundreds of students in the "way of the sword."
  • In 1998, and every year since, the Detroit Kendo Dojo has hosted the Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament, drawing kendo practitioners from across the U.S.
  • Mr. Tagawa generously provides public demonstrations of kendo in the community for various Japanese cultural events throughout the year.

In honor of his service, and with deep respect and admiration, Consul General Kuninori Matsuda presented this commendation to Mr. Yoshiteru Tagawa on February 17, 2013.
