Japanese Companies Provide Over 73,000 Direct Jobs at Nearly 500 Facilities in Ohio in 2016; Japan Continues as the Top Foreign Investor in the State
DETROIT -- The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit today released the official results of its 2016 Japanese Direct Investment Survey. The data, as of October 1, 2016, indicate that there are now 482 Ohio-based Japanese facilities which provide a total of 73,434 direct jobs. Ninety-eight percent of these direct jobs are held by local residents. As such, job creation in Ohio by Japanese companies has now increased 30% since the recession. Furthermore, Japanese companies now offer more jobs in Ohio than any other Midwest state.
Japan continues as the top foreign investor in the Buckeye State.
Japanese investment is well distributed across 66 of Ohio’s 88 counties. The state’s central region, where 142 facilities are concentrated, continues to be the most popular destination for Japanese investment. Significant facility and employment presences can be found all across the state.
Consul General Mitsuhiro Wada, pleased with the results, commented:
“As Consul General, I am so proud and encouraged by the Japanese investment in Ohio. The Japanese companies’ long-term dedication to Ohio—through R&D, sales, and manufacturing operations—is remarkable. As a centralized logistics hub, Ohio is an ideal place to invest. The state’s convenient location, excellent transportation systems and infrastructure, are key assets for the region’s important industries.”
He added: “Ohio’s strong, diverse economy, and excellent business conditions, continue to attract Japanese investment. Japanese companies contribute to the state’s automotive, medical/pharmaceutical, chemical and energy sectors, among others, and benefit greatly from the state’s deep and talented workforce.”
