Japanese Companies Provide More Than 40,000 Direct Jobs at Over 500 Facilities in Michigan in 2016; Japan’s Role as a Leading Foreign Investor Continues to Expand

DETROIT -- The Consulate General of Japan in Detroit today released the official results of its 2016 Japanese Direct Investment Survey. The data, as of October 1, 2016, indicate that there are now 502 Michigan-based Japanese facilities which provide a total of 40,358 direct jobs. Ninety-five percent of these direct jobs are held by local residents. Total employment at the 502 state-based facilities has now surpassed pre-recession levels.

Japan continues as a leading foreign investor in the Great Lakes State.

Japanese investment is well distributed across 39 of Michigan’s 83 counties with the strongest concentration in the southeast and southwest regions of the state. The 409 facilities in southeast Michigan are primarily R&D, engineering, sales, and service industry operations. In the southwest, particularly in the Battle Creek area, there is a concentration of many larger-scale manufacturing operations.

Consul General Mitsuhiro Wada, encouraged by the results, remarked:

“As Consul General, I am pleased by the ever-growing investment of Japanese companies here in Michigan. Japanese companies’ long-term commitment to Michigan—as seen in steady employment growth at their R&D, sales, and manufacturing facilities—is remarkable. Truly, the bilateral ties between Michigan and Japan are stronger than ever.”

He added: "Vehicle sales in the U.S. automotive market reached a new record level in 2016. Concurrently, Japanese companies’ contributions to Michigan’s economy and business climate grow more substantial every year. As the survey results indicate, Japanese companies remain committed to producing, employing, and investing locally. They are integral to expanding and innovating the automotive industry and continue to play a key role in Michigan’s economic comeback.”
