Mr. Dennis W. Archer Honored by Nation of Japan
Detroit - Dennis W. Archer, former mayor of the City of Detroit, was honored by the nation of Japan with the presentation of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon in a conferment ceremony held June 3rd, 2013. This state decoration is one of Japan's highest, and is bestowed by His Majesty, the Emperor of Japan, to foreign individuals who have made significant and notable contributions to the enrichment of bilateral relations with Japan. The commendation was presented by The Honorable Kuninori Matsuda, Consul General of Japan, at the Detroit Athletic Club on the occasion of the Japan America Society of Michigan and Southwest Ontario Annual Dinner.
In his remarks, Consul General Matsuda emphasized Mr. Archer's strong commitment to bilateral relations and expressed great appreciation for his "valued contributions in strengthening cultural, political and economic relations between Japan and the City of Detroit, between Japan and the State of Michigan, and between Japan and the United States."
A humbled and very appreciative Mr. Archer responded, "I did as a lawyer and a mayor what I thought and knew to be right."
