A Friendship Garden in Midland
![]() |
As a symbol of more than thirty years of friendship with Handa, Japan, three elegant stone lanterns enhance a peaceful and picturesque Japanese garden at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library in Midland, Michigan.
In 1981, The Dow Chemical Company in Midland expressed interest in establishing a plant in the City of Handa, which led to a visit to Midland by the Handa mayor, and, subsequently, a sister-city agreement followed by a warm relationship of student exchanges, goodwill delegation visits and lasting friendships between the citizens and communities.

The garden and lanterns – a yukimi style, an oribe style and a kasuga style – were a present from the city of Handa in commemoration of the 10th Anniversary as sister cities.
More information about the Midland – Handa sister-city partnership may be found on the cities’ websites at http://www.midland-mi.org/sistercity/ and http://www.city.handa.lg.jp/contents/99019954.html.
