Friday, March 25, 2011, marked the final day that the consulate’s Book of Condolence was opened to the public; the signing period has now concluded. Last Friday was also the final day that participating organizations were to fly flags at half-mast.
On behalf of the Japanese people and the Government of Japan, Mr. Kuninori Matsuda, Consul General of Japan in Detroit, conveys his heartfelt gratitude to those who expressed their sympathies in the Book of Condolence, as well as to those who lowered flags in recognition of the earthquake and tsunami victims.
Consul General Matsuda also wishes to express his appreciation for the outpouring of sympathy received via letters, phone calls, and email, and remains deeply grateful for the many generous donations made via the consulate or to other relief organizations.
In regards to the numerous offers from those willing to volunteer in Japan, the consulate encourages interested parties to contact any of the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) now operating in Japan. Further, some privately-run associations have begun accepting volunteers in Japan; volunteers are required to directly contact and make arrangements with accepting organizations in Japan, and provide for their own transportation and food.
