Consul General's Greeting
My name is Kazuyuki Katayama, the new Consul General of Japan in Detroit. I just arrived on September 20th, which begins my third opportunity to live in the United States. Previously, I had studied in Boston from 1986-1987, and had worked in Washington, D.C. from 1999-2002. Our Consulate General covers Japan’s relations with both states of Michigan and Ohio, and while this is my first time in Michigan, I have visited Ohio once before to watch a Cleveland Indians game.
I began working for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan 30 years ago, and have been posted to various locations overseas, such as Hong Kong, Beijing (four times including study), Kuala Lumpur, and Brussels. It is a great joy and honor for me to come back to the U.S., my favorite country, and especially this time as Consul General in Detroit, covering two states in the Midwest—America’s heartland.
During my term here, I will try my best to achieve the following goals:
- Firstly, I aim to create as many “Japan fans” as possible among Americans. I sincerely hope that American people in Michigan and Ohio will understand even more that Japan and the Japanese people are their true partners. I will strive to convey this through direct contact with local people, conversations, lectures, business sector economic activities, cultural exchanges, and people-to-people exchanges including grassroots and leadership.
- Secondly, I would like to study and know more about Michigan and Ohio as well as the people living there, thus to understand the diversity and source of power of this great country.
I look forward to working with all of you.
